I spotted Edin's blog post about PHP 4.4.6 now being linked against MySQL 5.0.36 on Windows and decided to see what is new in that release in comparison to the 5.0.33 I am currently running.
A quick visit to the MySQL's downloads page revealed a distinct absence of said release however. There are however release notes about MySQL 5.0.37, which lists some compelling fixes. Unfortunately, this release is nowhere to be found as well, even though the release notes claim it was released on 27 February 2007.

Ilia has noticed that MySQL have released a new version. I have compiled 5.0.36 libs mysqlf since that release didn't include pre-built windows binaries. I thought it would be the best if we bundled "original" MySQL DLLs so here is the PHP 4.4.6 binary co
If you read Appendix D of the mySQL manual, it states:
"The date mentioned with a release version is the date of the last change done internally at MySQL AB (the BitKeeper ChangeSet) on which the release was based, not the date when the packages were made available."
It's always been this way, even when they did regularly release "community" binaries. Back then, the lag time was blamed on the time it took to build and test the binaries. I don't know what the delay is blamed on now in this era of "source tarball" releases.
This is hardly unique in the open source world. Mozilla does the same thing.
