Ontario Monitor Tax

I was buying 2 monitors for the office today, when a came to paying the bill I discovered a rather nasty surprise. It seems that the Ontario government has decided to apply a $12.03 per monitor recycling tax as part of their EOS program. It looks like our liberal provincial government is always on a look out to grab more of our money, so they can spend it on idiotic initiatives such as eHealth.

I don't have any ideas on canadian politics, but I think that hardware waste is a serious problem, as there are the social and environmental impacts of producing hardware and the raw materials.

I'd be happy, if some regular conference speakers would like to raise the awareness of this problems among us power hardware users.

I agree with Thomas - Hardware waste is very serious - The amount of chemicals that are released when hardware (especially monitors) are scrapped is incredible.

If you could be sure it's going to be use for what they say it is this wouldn't be a problem. But when you have no idea what they're going to do with your money it actualy gets pretty annoying.

I'd say that I can understand the reasoning behind this. People just throw their old equipment away instead of recycling it. And this is unacceptable.

The trouble is that this tax has nothing to do with safe disposal. Since, I am getting this tax on a new monitor, rather then an old one I am disposing of. I fail to see how this tax will help disposal of old monitors that people simply leave on the curb or dump into trash containers.

Governments in all world think about new taxes. Such taxes are more easy to introduce.

That's the reality we live in. Everything is taxed in different way and we must pay even for breathing not entirely clean air. We pay for where we live, we pay for what we do, and we pay because we earn. I know that taxes are important part of economical basics of our civilization. But let's be honest, sometimes its just too much. Paying for everything is not enough, taxes are being everywhere, all the time, for everyone. I don't like that kind of politics that makes me pay double for every breath I take - and that is modern tax policy.

I went to buy a monitor today myself and was suprised to see that my 149.00 monitor ended up 183.00 when I asked what the 12.03 was I was told about this tax, So I left it there. So not only did the goverment loose 12.03 but also the pst and gst. Thanks for motivating my not to buy stuff. I am going to Quebec today to buy the same monitor for 12.03 less.

This is form of hidden tax, this form of taxes are are less noticeable by the public.
