About an hour ago, something I've been fighting for almost 2 years happened. The Scalar Type Hinting patch for PHP (the one I wrote almost a year ago) has been adjusted for PHP's trunk tree and committed by Derick.
Thanks to Derick for taking the time (when I didn't) to prep the patch for trunk and make this happen

According to the language parser files, the int|integer|long type hints all map to T_INT_HINT which assigns IS_LONG which is the system dependent integer.
(although that was just a quick scan, I dunno if IS_LONG really is a long int) David on :
Brilliant! Congrats on getting the patch in. Now all we need is a traversable type hint. Unless I'm mistaken, you can't have a function signature accept only traversable data structures. As in, you can either type hint for array (which excludes objects) or Traversable (which excludes arrays). The only way around it seems to be to use ArrayObject.

Nice to see it, however I have a question: would it be possible to have a virtual type "scalar" that would group all the scalar types? Sometimes I just want to prevent providing compound types, whereas all the scalar values should be allowed and I think it might be useful.

Hi Ilia, great work but I thought there was an ongoing discussion about which patch to commit (strict type checking or weak type hinting)?

There was a long discussion about this on the php developer list about a year ago and the consensus at the time was for strict hints only.
That said I've just added numeric and scalar type hints, that should help people looking for weak-hints. Dr.Colossos on :
