[Update March 3, 2012] Based on great suggestion from Rasmus, I've updated the charset slide to clarify that the change introduced in 5.4 relates to the default charset used by internal entities functions (htmlspecialchars, htmlentities, etc...) and updating the default_charset INI is one of the changes you may need to do to account for this change. One small note, __invoke() is actually a 5.3 feature, although it is rather less known, so I *snuck it in* to the 5.4 talk hehe...

SessionHandler is specifically to expose the internal PHP handlers, and the SessionHandlerInterface is for easily implementing as you have shown. see http://php.net/SessionHandler for more information (I wrote the documentation
